Illinois Special Education Attorneys

Families of students with special needs often face significant obstacles as they seek to provide a quality and beneficial education for the child that means his or her specific needs. As they must deviate from the standardized path through the education process and request additional services, there is often push back.

Each client, no matter his or her learning abilities, is entitled to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). At Thomas W. Hunter, P.C., in Illinois, we fight to ensure that your child is provided just that.

Ensuring Your Child Gets The Right Attention

At Thomas W. Hunter, P.C. we assist parents, facilitating the development of an individualized education program (IEP) plan that is customized to the child and his or her needs and goals. This often requires attendance at multiple hearings and appeals decisions in an effort to arrive at a plan that meet the educational requirements for your child's age and development.

We will communicate on your behalf with appropriate school district offices and officials to reach a resolution on the IEP that you need. We are skilled in these negotiations and will advocate on behalf of your child, thoroughly prepared for what will be required. We draw on the expert opinions of medical experts and other evaluations to substantiate our requests.

Lawyers Providing Representation In All Hearings

If a due process hearing is required, we will gather and prepare for the hearing with the necessary documentation. With our legal understanding, your family can successfully face these proceedings and achieve a quality education for your child.

Federal laws provide protection for disabled children. To ensure that children with a disability receive a quality education, the federal government has enacted Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which states that children with a disability shall not be excluded from or denied the benefits of any program receiving federal funding.

For children in public schools, this means that they must receive free and appropriate education (FAPE). In addition to the Federal Rehabilitation Act, the federal government has enacted the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which states that children with special needs may receive an individual education plan (IEP) to provide for their educational needs.

Fighting Back Against Negligent Schools

In an effort to cut costs, some school district may not provide adequate guidance and assistance to children with a physical or mental disability. If your child has learning challenges or physical challenges that require specific assistance, we can help.

We have experience in cases where a child needs tutoring, medical assistance, or other necessary educational assistance. There is a process we go through that includes mediation. In rare cases, a matter may go to court. However, most cases are resolved without the necessity of trial because the schools know the costs of going to court.
